2017 Bobcat Red – Meet the cunning and complex beast!

Mar 5, 2021 | Adventures in Winemaking

Why the Bobcat name for this great blend, you may ask?  Well, if you’ve been by to visit us at the winery, you may have been lucky enough to meet (from a very safe distance), one of our resident bobcats.  If you are an extremely lucky one, you may have even seen our mama bobcat out with her cubs, playing under the oak trees.

Like the Bobcat, this blend may appear as unassuming at first glance, but get close enough and you’ll meet a cunning and complex beast.  Give it a try and let us know what you think!

NOTES

Vineyard
The Livermore Valley AVA boasts one of the original U.S. appellations granted by the BATF in October of 1982. It has an east-west orientation, making it unique among northern California wine growing regions. This orientation allows the coastal fog and marine breezes to come in from the Pacific Ocean and the San Francisco Bay and cool the valley’s warm air, resulting in warm days and cool nights, ideal conditions for producing fully-ripened, balanced fruit.

Fermentation
Whole berry fermentation in macro bins with punch downs twice per day allowed for a complete and predictable fermentation.  Primary fermentation was followed by malolactic fermentation before aging.

Aging
Barrel aged for approximately 30 months in 25% new French and American oak.

Tasting Notes
Give this wine 30 minutes to open up and flavors will be bursting!  Light in body, but deceivingly complex and elegant – this easy drinker will charismatically quench the most novice and discerning palettes alike.  The nose begins with plum, boysenberry and hibiscus tea.  As layers unfold, you will notice raspberry, mocha java and cocoa powder with an undercurrent of sarsaparilla, cola and rosehips.  A perfectly food-friendly table wine, but next level aficionados will delight in all this wine has to offer.
