Join us each month and get to know the wines that make us tick. Every month, Charles R will feature one of our favorite wines, as we explore the technical aspects of the wine, discuss sensory characteristics, recommend food pairings and share behind-the-scenes stories. You’ll learn fun facts about the history of the varietal, pairings with local takeout, and where the grapes come from; it will be edutaining (educational + entertaining = edu-taining)! You’ll find details on our website, in our emails, on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and Youtube. At the end of the month, grab a bottle of our featured wine and join winemaker Lisa Lee on Zoom for a sensory wrap up, and share your recipe, pairings or wine notes with the group.
We would love your input! Post a photo, recipe or video with a bottle of our Wine of the Month and tag us on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and Youtube with your favorite pairing, a take-out item from your favorite restaurant, a recipe that you prepared with the wine as an ingredient or paired up, even a fast food combo! NOTES
Vineyard Tracy Hills AVA is one of California’s youngest designated appellations. The Ramon Rios Vineyard is a moderately well-drained, fine textured site, located at the base of the Tracy Hills near Mount Oso. Hot dry summers and cool moist winters characterize the area. The Ramon Rios vineyard in the Tracy has been an integral part of the Charles R production for many years. Focusing on more of our Italian and Portuguese varietals, this vineyard has been a long time staple for our wine line up. Ramon’s diligent care of this vineyard has helped produce many of our most well-known wines and Port style wines.
But grab these vintages while you can! As if 2020 did not bring us enough change and unexpected circumstance, this vineyard is under new ownership, and we will no longer be making wines with grapes from this site. A big thank you to our very good friend, Ramon – your grapes will be missed.
Winemaking Getting the color right with Rose is always the most nerve-racking part! Will it be too dark? Too much contact? Not enough? This Sangiovese spent 24 hours on the skins and still resisted pulling color. The resulting color is delicately salmon-hued with tones of summer peach. No secondary fermentation has helped it retain a bright and refreshing acidity.
Fermentation Fermented at cellar temperature over 7 days with RBS 133 yeast – an Italian isolate that is designed to work well with an enhance the uniqueness of Italian varietals, specifically Sangiovese. Aroma profile is delicate and fruity with hints of wild violets.
Aging Fermented and aged in stainless steel for 6 months
Tasting Notes While completely dry, the wine comes across as medium bodied, providing a balanced fullness on the palette. Mixed berry lemonade comes to mind with lesser notes of honeysuckle and tropical fruit lingering on the finish. The lower alcohol helps this wine get along with just about every cuisine, from pizza, pasta and BBQ to spicy Thai and curry dishes.
Interests and hobbies: Pool parties, BBQ’s, outdoor picnics, brunch gatherings, and international travel.
